Offer Therapeutic Support

Offering Climate Aware Therapeutic Support

Are you a trained and qualified psychological professional such as a counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist or coach who cares deeply about the climate and ecological crisis? Are you working on your own eco-related distress and would like to offer some of your time for free to help others manage theirs? Do you have the capacity for the deep listening, support and validation that is desperately needed?

CPA has a Directory of Therapeutic Support Practitioners who offer up to three free sessions. This is offered to anyone over the age of 18 who is experiencing eco-related distress, including that arising from eco-activism or work in the climate field. Many Practitioners on the Directory also offer this support to people who have been arrested or imprisoned for climate activism.

The aim of Climate Aware Therapeutic Support

  • Offering a listening and holding space for people to talk about their eco-related distress. This might include alienation from family and friends, talk of elective childlessness and suicidal ideation;
  • Validating people’s responses to the Climate emergency, whatever they might be;
  • Talking through people’s experience of climate activism and any related arrests/ imprisonment;
  • Helping people to understand complex individual and cultural responses as the crisis unfolds and we face into the unthinkable;
  • Collaborating with people to develop resilience, so that they can contribute to sustainable communities and prepare for change;
  • Signposting to other services or ongoing counselling.

How to join

To join the CPA Climate Aware Therapeutic Support Directory you must be a qualified and registered psychological professional with professional indemnity insurance. You must also be a member of the CPA.  Click here to join. You can either pay the full fee or, if this is uncomfortable for you or you are joining predominantly to join the Therapeutic Support Directory, you can opt to pay the reduced fee. We particularly welcome TS Practitioners from minority and under-represented backgrounds and if you identify as a person of colour we can, if you wish, put you in touch with the CPA Affinity Group for BIPoC members who meet monthly for support and to work on ideas for in-reach and outreach projects.

This will be posted on the TS Directory and people will then be able to contact you directly.

Please note that, before joining, we will ask you to provide details of your engagement with your own process connected with the climate and ecological crisis and any relevant trainings undertaken. We actively encourage you to continue such engagement and training once you have joined the TS Directory.

Once you have joined the TS Directory

You will be sent an introduction pack with helpful information and tips about what Therapeutic Support is in practice. Please note that CPA is not operating a counselling service or promoting individual practitioners. We simply operate a Directory of climate aware Practitioners who offer the free sessions of Therapeutic Support.  CPA does not guarantee that individual TS Practitioners will be contacted for Therapeutic Support.

Become a Member

We warmly welcome anyone interested in exploring the psychological aspects of the climate and ecological emergency to join us.

What does membership mean?

The Climate Psychology Alliance is a Community Benefit Society, so by signing up as a member you automatically become a co-owner of the organisation. Participation is key so we welcome active involvement and would love to hear what you would like to contribute - which can be as much or as little as you want.

Individual membership of £84.00 a year (pay forward rate*), £54.00 a year (standard rate), or £9.60 a year (reduced rate**) offers:

  • immediate access to our online community platform where you can browse groups, topics and events, connect with other members, explore what you might like to bring to CPA, and share your climate psychology journey;
  • access to regular members-only events, including a monthly Zoom meeting for new members the monthly Thinking Space meetings where members share emerging ideas and research with each other; and peer supervision meetings for those offering climate-aware therapeutic support and climate cafe listening circles;
  • an open invitation to join groups; for example we have a group of young members and a group focusing on work with young people; there is one for people who facilitate CPA’s climate cafe listening circles; one working on decolonising and antiracism; and one for people involved in producing CPA’s journal Explorations. You can also start your own group if you can’t find one that suits your interests or if you want to meet others who live near you or share aspects of your identity;
  • a monthly email update of CPA news and links to events relevant to climate psychology;
  • the right to take part in governance such as attending the monthly Board meetings and the weekly coordinating group meetings; and the right to vote at our AGM and stand for our Board.

*The pay forward rate (at £7 per month) is intended for those who feel able to help us support our offerings of climate cafe listening circles, training, peer supervision, and therapeutic support for those affected by the climate crisis. Given the numerous challenges that climate change brings to us all, we try to serve as many people as possible. We have limited funds and we make no profit or surplus, so with just a little extra support from you we can reach and help more people. We know that some potential members simply have no funds to spare so we don't expect it, but if you can afford to pay more, that's very much appreciated.

**Our reduced rate is for those on low incomes; students or young people between 16 and 25; those who are joining in order to offer three free sessions (climatepsychologyalliance.org) of Therapeutic Support to people struggling with their feelings about the climate crisis.

We encourage you to have a look at Our Values before signing up.

Please note that membership is automatically renewed. However, you can cancel your membership at any time. If you would like us to do this for you, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
