'Have you considered subtracting that?’ Online Workshop hosted by Global Climate Psychology For A Just Future, with Leidy Klotz
The Additive Bias, the tendency to overlook solutions that require subtraction, is a well-studied phenomenon, highly relevant in the light of the emerging climate crisis. After all, “more is more” at the expense of a healthy life on a finite planet has brought us here. An aversion towards limiting ourselves or cutting back makes tackling the climate crisis appear as an immense sacrifice. But also climate action may be affected by this bias. We often ask ourselves what we can do more of rather than stepping back and examining which strategy is actually making the most impact. Maybe we should focus on what we need to get rid of to approach the “true essence” instead? Together with Leidy Klotz (“Subtract – The Untapped Science of Less”) we would like to discover how climate psychologists can use the knowledge about the Additive Bias to support socio-ecological transformation processes, help to change collective human behavior and even make their own work more sustainable.
